2001-2005
In 2001, the
MGLC celebrated its 10th Anniversary. This also saw the appointment of
a new Musical Director, Adrian Kirk. Broadening their musical scope the
Chorus ventured into a classical repertoire for their “Seduction” concert.
Later that year they travelled to Adelaide to attend the Feast Festival
and perform in the “Absolutely Everybody” concert with the
Adelaide Gay & Lesbian Choir and the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Choir. 2001
also saw the first of our free Christmas concerts with the Rainbow Band
in the main courtyard of the Prahran Market.
Being invited
by Richard Branson to perform at the opening of his South Yarra Virgin
Megastore and sing in front of Sir Elton John was a definite highlight
of 2002. Launching into the world of Burt Bacharach saw the Chorus perform
their highly successful “The Look of Love” concert and the
release of their third major CD “Walk on By”. This was followed
by performances at the Gay Games Opening Ceremony in Sydney with k d lang,
and a major performance at “Sing out to the World” at the Sydney
Opera House.
In 2003, during
a hot Summer, the Chorus performed a joint concert at the Melbourne Town
Hall with the Seattle Men’s Chorus, as part of their Australasian
Tour. The Chorus were also proud to be invited to perform at the Victorian
Seniors Festival at the new BMW Edge glass amphitheatre at Federation Square.
The Chorus also presented “In the Mood” –
Songs of the 1940s & 50s at the newly refurbished Prahran Town Hall in
August.
In 2004, the
Chorus performed at the Victorian Seniors Weeks and had their first major
concert in July at the Malvern Townhall where they presented "Goodbye
Yellow Brick Road - Songs of Sir Elton John" over two performances.
The Chorus also has plans for a joint concert with the GALS (the gay and
lesbians singers in Auckland) in October of 2004, followed by a performance
at the launch of the Inaugural Australian GLBTIQ Multicultural Conference (AGMC).
At the end of 2004, we said goodbye to our Music Director, Adrian Kirk.
2005 was the start of a new direction for the Chorus with the appointment of a new Music Director. Our first major concert under the new baton was "Bette, Babs & Beyond - a Divathon of choral Proportions'. The Chorus were thrilled to win a 2005 Rainbow Award for 'Best Live Performance' for this concert. In the second half of the year we had our first joint concert with the Melbourne Rainbow Band - 'Movie Magic', at the Malvern Town Hall.
2006-Onwards
2006 was a year of firsts!
For the first time in our history we have a patron, the great John Michael Howson, followed closely by our second patron, the fabulous Angela Toohey.
For the first time, the MGLC was invited to perform with a major star. we were part of the Jimmy Somerville: Up Close and Personal “Evolve” Concert , with MC Bob Downe, recorded guests Justice Michael Kirby & Eddie Perfect, Hamer Hall, on 2 March.
For the first time, the MGLC appeared on commercial tv on the Kerri-Anne Show on Channel 9, singing on the steps of Crown Atrium.
In July, 18 MGLC Members toured with the Combined Gay & Lesbian Choir of Australia and New Zealand to Chicago (Out Games), New York and Montreal (Gay Games).
We also had two major concerts in 2006. The first was 'Around the World With 80 Gays - music from around the globe' at the Prahran Town Hall in July, followed by 'Feelin' Groovy - songs of the 50s & 60s in October.
We look forward to seeing you there!
