The
Melbourne Gay & Lesbian Chorus is an award winning Australian choir
whose passionate commitment to solidarity, diversity and camaraderie through
music has ensured its ongoing success through to its now twelfth year.
In 1990, gay performer Lawrence McGuire approached a small number of friends
with the vision of starting a community choir in Melbourne. Trevor Dunn (the
first Musical Director) and a handful of founding members created ‘Alsounds’
thereby paving the way for a truly remarkable future.
As a predominantly gay and lesbian choir, 'Alsounds' changed its name in 1994
to more accurately express ourselves and reflect changing community attitudes.
The MGLC is committed to its communities, challenging stereotypes and standing
as proud role models for those still struggling with their sexuality or identity.
MGLC members are drawn from all backgrounds, ages, interests and levels of
musical experience.
In 1995, under the baton of Tuck Wah Leong, the MGLC took out first prize
in the adult section of the Boroondara Eisteddfod.
